What We Study

We promotes an inclusive, fun, safe and education environment to learn historical fencing. 

Thames River Historical Fencing is proudly part of he Selohaar Fechtschule

We train in the  Liechtenauer system.  Lichtenauer was a sword master in Germany during the 15th century.  His teachings include: sword, dagger, wrestling, poleaxe and spear.

FAQ

What is a practice like?

Warm-ups, games, techniques, drilling, then open floor space.

Every session starts with warms ups and a game, then move onto techniques described by medieval fencing master.  Then we have open floor space where people can use their time as they want to.  This usually consists of sparring and practicing

Do I need equipment

Not at first, but you will eventually.​

The club has minimal loaner gear for new students.  You will want to purchase your own over time.​

Do you train other medieval weapons?

Long sword is our main focus. â€‹

Understanding how to use a longsword lays the foundation for other weapons.  During open floor space people can study and practice other weapons.

Is there an age limt?

18 and up, 16 and up with guardians approval. 

We have students spanning all ages, experience levels and pysical conditions.  Everyone is welcome.

Is it safe?

Mostly yes.  

This is a martial arts class and like any sport or activity there is risk.  We take safety very seriously.  The tools we use to train are called feders.  They are blunt trainers deigned to flex on thrusts.  In addition to proper safety equipment and control they allow us to train with out harming each other. 

How much do classes cost?

About $10 a class.​

Our classes are run through the town of Ledyard Ct as "Longsword 101"and have to follow their seasonal sign up sessions.  Each season averages out to $10 a class
